Women’s professional bicycle racing thrived in America from 1895 to 1902, drawing large and enthusiastic crowds in Detroit and Grand Rapids, and around the country. Despite efforts by the League of American Wheelmen to marginalize the sport and by critics to belittle and objectify the women, these athletes forced turn-of-the-century America to rethink strongly held convictions about female frailty and competitive spirit. Author Roger Gilles shares how these speed and endurance contests helped pave the way for professional women’s sports.
