Thursday Classic Mystery Book Club
Book summary: A businessman from Nebraska hires Nero Wolfe to find his son, who took a train for New York nine years before and quite plainly doesn’t want to be found. Wolfe soon succeeds, but there’s a complication: The son has been framed for a murder he didn’t commit and has now been found guilty. While Wolfe and Archie Goodwin are struggling to untangle the case, one of Wolfe’s freelance operatives is targeted and dies in a hit-and-run.
Since Stout’s books aren’t long, this month we’ll have an optional extra selection, or rather two novellas, in the book called Not Quite Dead Enough. WWII is raging, and Wolfe has decided to enlist in the infantry to fight Germans. Archie is summoned back from active duty to bring Wolfe to his senses. Archie’s hot-tempered girlfriend, Lily Rowan, suggests a case that may call for Wolfe’s brain power, but then the whole case slides sideways. All that and murder by hand grenade too!
Meetings are held in person on the third Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. at Civic Center Library Board Room. Each month, the club selects and reads a mystery novel published before 1960 by Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Rex Stout, John Dickson Carr, Erle Stanley Gardner, Ngaio Marsh, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen, and other well-known authors.
