“In the midst of life we are in death…”From lament to release, from sorrow to transcendence, Through the Veil is a meditation on death and the rituals we use to face it. Spanning Māori and Western Christian traditions, this evocative programme explores the many musical responses to grief, mourning, and the eternal journey beyond.
At the centre of the concert are two poignant works that reflect distinct cultural perspectives: Herbert Howells’ Requiem, a deeply personal expression of loss framed within the Anglican tradition, and Reuben Rameka’s Takoto mai rā, a powerful and moving response to death grounded in te ao Māori.
The journey continues with music that spans centuries and continents:
• Michael McGlynn’s Media Vita, with its stark reminder of mortality
• Arvo Pärt’s De Profundis, a haunting cry from the depths of the soul
• Francis Poulenc’s Litanies à la Vierge noire, a fervent prayer to the Virgin Mary
• Alexander Lloyd Blake’s arrangement of Poor Wayfaring Stranger, a spiritual vision of the journey home
• Ēriks Ešenvalds’ The Long Road, a tender love song shaped by grief
• Jacob Collier’s World, Oh World, a farewell to life and a call to love
Through the Veil is an invitation to reflect, to grieve, and to hope—to listen across cultures and beliefs as we honour the dead and the living
