The Live Reading

Something curious is afoot! On Saturday June 15 from 12 PM to 5 PM The Halifax Humanities Society will be holding Through the Looking Glass Live!, a marathon reading fundraiser of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Through the Looking Glass. Join us in the cozy Reading Room of the King’s College Library (6350 Coburg Rd, Halifax NS) to hear your favourite chapters read aloud, challenge your friends to a game of chess, and enter a draw to own an original piece or art in this celebration of art and literature!
Stay tuned for our roster of readers and details on how to watch online.

Through the Looking Glass Live! is a free event, but donations will be accepted at the door in support of The Halifax Humanities Society. The Society is a non-profit organization committed to offering free, non-credit, university-level humanities education to adults living on low incomes in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Students from a range of ages and backgrounds come together with volunteer university professors to study the great works of Western philosophy, literature, political theory, theology, and art, at no cost whatsoever to students.

The Art Draw

Following the final reading of Through the Looking Glass, we will be holding a draw for an original painting by local artist, Rose Adams. Tickets can be purchased for $20 from your local Halifax Humanities board member, or email [email protected] to purchase.

Hollyhocks is a mixed media painting on paper created in plein air while the background was prepared in advance. Adams’ rigorous process involves collaging many different papers on archival rag paper and covering this with layers of acrylic gel. She then draws with both fine tip nib pens and paint brush and ink. The next stage involves acrylic painting to create a harmonious figure/ground. Finally, the flowers are drawn and painted in a flourish of oil paint. The work is on archival Stonehenge paper and has been framed by Secord Gallery.
