We are thrilled to invite you to a special public lecture by Dr. Danjuma Gibson, professor of pastoral theology, care, and counseling at Calvin Theological Seminary, and a practicing psychotherapist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Gibson will be discussing his latest book, Through the Eyes of Titans (2024).About the Speaker:
Dr. Danjuma Gibson brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his work. He has served as a senior pastor in Chicago for over sixteen years while also working as a commercial banker. He holds a Ph.D. from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, an MBA from DePaul University, and multiple degrees in theology and ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Dr. Gibson is also a licensed psychotherapist with clinical training from the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago. His research explores the intersection of black religious experience and psychoanalytic discourse, enhancing our understanding of personhood, identity formation, and human flourishing.
About the Book:
In Through the Eyes of Titans, Dr. Gibson humanizes historical figures we often idealize. By examining the self-care practices of Ida B. Wells, Fannie Lou Hamer, Benjamin Elijah Mays, and Martin Luther King Jr., he invites readers to challenge racial hatred and injustice in their own contexts. This book explores how these titans' introspection and self-work enabled their celebrated achievements, offering us valuable lessons in self-care and introspection to continue dismantling structures of racial hatred and promoting freedom, love, equity, and justice.
Praise for the Book:
"In contrast to the usual, white-washed narratives idealizing civil rights titans, Danjuma Gibson offers a nuanced understanding of the 'beautiful but arduous' spiritual and psychological work undergirding the titans' courageous lives. In his distinctive and poetic voice, Gibson both challenges and inspires readers to move beyond silence and complicity in the face of white supremacy. This is timely and vital reading for Christians and others who want to see 'what love looks like.'"
-- Mary Clark Moschella, professor of pastoral theology and care, Yale Divinity School
