A chamber music & poetry performance inspired by Su Shi’s life of exile, loss, and transformation.
About this Event

Su Shi: A Musical Journey Through Ten Transformative Years
Presented by Mt. Far Ensemble

This program explores a pivotal decade in the life of Su Shi (1037–1101), from age 36 to 46—a period marked by political exile, personal loss, and profound inner transformation.

Rather than presenting Su Shi’s poetry as text or historical material, this performance brings his inner world into sound.

Through chamber music, live poetry narration, and improvisation, the program traces a human journey through collapse and renewal—moving from emotional openness, through grief and displacement, toward a quiet form of clarity and acceptance.

Featured works include poems such as Prelude to Water Melody, River City, Calming the Waves, and Meditation on the Red Cliff, among others.

A Living, Shared Performance Experience

In selected moments, sound will extend beyond the stage. Audience members will be invited to participate through simple, intuitive actions such as gently tapping small stones or joining in soft vocal humming. No musical experience is required.

These elements are designed to dissolve the boundary between performer and listener, allowing the music to emerge collectively in the space.

About the Program

This concert does not aim to “explain” Su Shi.

Instead, it asks a simple question:
What does it feel like to live through loss, change, and eventual release—inside a single human life?

The performance unfolds as a continuous musical narrative where poetry, sound, and silence interact in real time.

Note to Audience

This is a participatory listening experience.
Audience engagement is optional and always gentle in nature.
