About this Event

What does it mean to tell a story through a woman's eyes? Through Her Eyes: The female gaze in German Cinema is a film series curated by the Goethe-Institut Netherlands. Over a period of five months, we present a selection of films that provide insight into cinema made by women, with female voices, from a female perspective and the urge to disrupt patriarchy.

Length: 124 min.

Director: Maren Ade

Language: German with English subtitles

The film tells the story of Gitti and Chris, an unusual couple struggling through a holiday in secluded togetherness. We get to know two people as they can only be when they are alone, and their secret rituals, silliness, unfulfilled desires and power struggles.

Triggered by a seemingly unimportant event - meeting another couple - the relationship begins to falter. The others are not only more successful, but also know how to hide a conventional man-woman role distribution behind a modern façade. Chris begins to take his cue from the others and tries to show his headstrong girlfriend her limits, which deeply shakes Gitti's trust in her boyfriend. Her attempt to adapt to his new desired image evolves from playing with a new role to a silent battle against herself. While Chris blossoms in the role of the stronger and Gitti opens up in new ways, she threatens to lose herself.

With subtle humour and cruel accuracy, the film tells of the contradictory longings of a couple in search of their own identity. An intimate love story that delves into the depths of a relationship and reflects the emotional disorientation of a generation. Maren Ade: "I wanted to make a film about the tangled, unique entity that two people make when they have a love relationship. The main character should be a couple and not a single person."
