Here's what you missed! The boy-king Edward VI held the throne for only six shaky years after his powerful father's death. Now Edward has died, and the realm is in turmoil with various noble families and figures desperately vying for power and position. Henry VIII's oldest child, Mary, is a devout Catholic, as was her mother. Elizabeth, daughter of Anne Boleyn, is next in the line of succession...as established by Henry. However, Edward named his cousin Lady Jane Grey as his heir. Proclaimed queen but not yet crowned, 17-year-old Jane Grey is deposed by Mary and her supporters.
Now the nine-days queen is due to be executed for treason while Queen Mary fights to return England to the true faith, and Protestant, practical Princess Elizabeth bides her time.
Three queens. One fateful night. Are they playing chess? Or are they pawns in someone else's game? Find out at Three Queens, performed in Gamut's Alexander Grass Second Stage, directed by Karen Ruch.
As always, Stage Door admission is by donation only upon arrival. “Come as you are, Pay what you will!” Doors will open 45 minutes prior to each performance.
