Location
Nizamuddin Dargah | New Delhi, DL
In an age where mighty emperors waged wars for glory and power, there rose to prominence another set of leaders who sought to conquer the heart of people. Their doors were always open for all castes and creeds from emperors to slaves, poets and fakirs. And even today, almost 800 years since they first set foot in Hindustan, the Sufi saints continues to hold a special place in our spiritual and cultural lives.
The khanqahs became centres of dialogue, debate and exchange of ideas and of music and poetry.
It was in one such Khanqah when a renowned Sufi Saint, Nizamuddin Auliya asked his favorite disciple Amir Khusro to write in the language of the masses and rest, as they say, is history, or in this case poetry!
Our upcoming walk at the Dargah-e-Nizamuddin Aulia explores the connections between the city, it’s beloved Saint and the many poets of Delhi as we explore the literary journey of this city's lingua franca, "Urdu" and those who gave it form, as we course through the lives of 'shora' such as Amir Khursau, Jahanara and of course Ghalib, who had made Delhi their home and transformed this city into the center of Urdu 'Rekhta & Adab'!!!
Meander with us on streets which once saw the great Saint tread softly, yet whose tenets of spiritual healing continue to echo strongly in these alleys and teach us lessons of universal love, brotherhood & hope....where the mundane and mystical blend seamlessly as we jostle amidst crowds who sell kaftans & kebabs, flowers & fragrances, masalas & mithaais…
Where the 'Rekhta' (Shayari/Poetry) & Sufiyana music still resonates gently....mesmerising people with its uplifting tunes and where we share hazaar stories as you discover some spectacular monuments from a bygone era!!
A must-do for Dilli history buffs and ‘shayari ke shauqeen’, those who want to know more about Sufism and the lovers of visual/photography experiences.
The walk will be conducted in a mix of Urdu and Hindi.
