Led by Kay van DykIn this workshop run by the Bench School of Jewellery, you’ll learn how to design, texture, saw, shape, and finish the metal, and how to make hooks or hoops to hang your earrings on. No experience is needed, the course is perfect for beginners.
Non-precious metals such as copper and brass are included, and you’ll receive 6 grams of silver to start your project. Extra metal can be purchased on the day.
Wear fully closed in shoes such as sneakers, tie long hair back, and remember to bring along your glasses if you wear them!
Kay van Dyk is a contemporary art jeweller and teacher from Whakatū Nelson, who has 25 years of experience teaching Adult Community Education jewellery classes.
Between 2011 and 2020, she tutored Object Design at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Bachelor of Arts and Media programme and has exhibited throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Her jewellery can be found in a small number of galleries.
In 2021, Kay initiated Nelson Jewellery Week (NJW), a biennial celebration and showcase for national makers to come together in a series of exhibitions, workshops and jewellery-related talks. She is the Creative Director of NJW, which is presented by Arts Council Nelson.
Kay is a founding member of the conceptual jewellery collective Project 21, who have exhibited throughout Aotearoa from 2018 to the present.
