Echolight is faster, safer, and more accurate than a DEXA scan. Echolight measures bone mineral density through an ultrasound scan of the spine and femur without radiation. The scan takes minutes, and a report is generated immediately. Echolight measures not only the cortical outer layer of bone but also the inner trabecular layer, which results in a more complete assessment of bone strength and fracture risk.
The cost is comparable to cash pay for a DXA scan: $225 for the lumbar spine + 1 hip and $275 for the lumbar spine and both hips. According to the American Medical Association, Echolight may be eligible for reimbursement from your insurer using the following CPT code: 0815T: Ultrasound-based Radiofrequency Ultrasound Multispectometry (REMS), bone-density study and fracture-risk assessment, 1 or more sites, hips, pelvis, or spine.
