Designer Olwen Bourke delves into the history of Irish lace and its relevance and revival in fashion today.
About this Event

This talk explores the rich history and heritage of Irish lace, from its origins as a cottage industry to its vital role during the Great Famine. Lacemaking provided an important source of income for women and families during a time of devastating hardship, helping many to survive and, for some, contributing toward the cost of emigration. The story of Irish lace is therefore one of resilience, connecting craft with family, community, survival, and the Irish diaspora.

The talk will also trace the revival of Irish lace in contemporary fashion and its enduring relevance as a living craft. Drawing on Olwen Bourke’s experience as an Irish fashion designer specializing in wedding gowns made with Irish lace, she will explore how this remarkable textile tradition has evolved from a means of survival into a celebrated form of couture. Through its layers of history, craftsmanship, migration, and renewal, Irish lace offers a powerful reflection of Portland Textile Month’s theme, “Layers of Resilience.”
