About this Event

THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY will be screened at the Friendship Garden in the western entrence of the University of Incarnate Word campus near the Student Engagement Center. The screening will be followed by a conversation via Zoom with the film's screenwriter and director, Talia Lugacy and local veterans.

The San Antonio premiere of this new Indie film is about veterans coping with trauma caused by war. They engage in dialogue with other vets as they are making paper out of old uniforms as a therapeutic mechanism for healing.

The film’s storyline follows Marine combat veteran Isabelle Casale (Talia Lugacy) and her interaction with a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose antiwar art, poetry, and papermaking keep them together, despite the haunting specter of their friend’s death by suicide in an NYC subway car. The cast is virtually all veterans of these recent and past wars.

This is Lugay’s second feature film co-produced with actress Rosario Dawson. It won Audience Awards at the San Francisco IndieFest and Indie Street Film Festival, and won Best Feature Narrative Award at the Woods Hole Film Festival. It is currently being screened in venues in New York City, New Jersey, Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles, and HBOMax will release it nationwide on November 3.

Talia Lugacy is a grantee recipient of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for projects in music, theatre, film and digital media projects led by women.

A recent study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that from 2013-2019, just 10% of Grammy nominees were women, and from 2012-2018 only 22% of artists, 12% of songwriters and 2% of producers of 700 popular songs from the Hot 100 year-end Billboard Charts were female.

“Women are more than half of the population, but they are still woefully underrepresented in music, theatre, film, and digital media industries.”

There will be drinks, pizza and snack for purchase at the SEC Café on the lower floor. The event is outdoors, but if rain we will move indoors to the SEC Ballroom. For more information email at [email protected]

This program is co-sponsored by ABOUT FACE, Veterans against the war and Veterans For Peace.
