About this Event

NEW RESTORATION!
"Brilliantly breaks with tradition and gives us a movie that actually inspires us to think about what it was like to be this man…a remarkable impression of a life lived curiously, but well.” - Roger Ebert
"Intelligence, eccentricity, and a sharp vision." - Time Magazine
"Brilliant and transfixing." - Janet Maslin, The New York Times
"Remarkably original and imaginative." – The Daily Mail
"A masterpiece." – The Toronto Globe and Mail

As part of their August series “SEE•SOUND,” 7th House is proud to present the first Los Angeles screening in decades of one of the standout independent films of the 1990s and one of the most innovative music biopics ever made – on one of 20th Century music history’s most eccentrically brilliant performers — THIRTY TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD (1993).

A rare film biography as boldly unconventional as its subject, writer-director François Girard’s visionary portrait of iconoclastic, world-renowned pianist Glenn Gould explodes the conventions of the form to illuminate the brilliant mind and innermost obsessions of a singular artist. Across thirty-two vignettes encompassing everything from dramatic sketches to documentary interviews to avant-garde animation, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould pieces together the story of Gould’s trajectory from child prodigy to celebrated concert pianist who turned his back on public performance to pursue his all-consuming fascination with recording technology. Led by a tour-de-force performance by Colm Feore and underscored by Gould’s landmark recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Girard’s film daringly deconstructs the enigma of genius.

Newly restored under Girard’s supervision, we are very excited to share this gem of music cinema and independent filmmaking with LA audiences on the big screen!

Special thanks to Janus Films.

Dir. François Girard, 1993, 93 mins, Canada, English, Unrated, Color, Digital.
