Third Thursday: The Art of the First Lady

Explore the creative legacies of America’s First Ladies through the art of needlework, craftsmanship, and design. This Third Thursday program highlights the artistic talents and personal expression woven into historic textiles created by First Ladies: offering a deeper understanding of how art reflected identity, history, and leadership.

Featured speaker Denise Layman is a researcher, educator, and author specializing in historic needlework, particularly pieces made by U.S. First Ladies. A former docent at the National First Ladies Library & Museum and a volunteer holiday decorator at the White House, Denise combines archival research and reverse engineering to recreate historic textile works.

Her lifelong passion for historical textiles began during the U.S. Bicentennial and has evolved into a body of research and creative practice. Denise has personally created several pieces, including replicas, and is currently developing a forthcoming publication on First Ladies’ needlework with her mother, Johanna Titus. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from Messiah University and creates immersive learning experiences for audiences of all ages.

Guests will also enjoy a wine and light bites reception, making this an engaging and social evening of history and art.
