Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday you’ll create artful braids inspired by Japanese art.
The UMFA has two beautiful swords on view in the Japanese art gallery. The masterful artistry of the sword makers is evident in the metalwork, but the swords also have intricate silk braids on the handle and scabbard. The art of braiding these ties is called Kumihimo.
Find inspiration in the work of these masters of Kumihimo and practice in the classroom using a small loom and thread.
