Oskar Barnack is one of the most influential people in the proliferation of photography across the world with his invention of the 35mm film camera. His contributions to the world of photography and Leica are so significant that Leica created the international Oskar Barnack Award in 1979 to award excellence in high-quality reportage photography.

Facts About Oskar Barnack:

- Invented the first 35mm film photography camera

- Worked at Leitz from 1911 to 1936

- Invented the 35mm film canister

- Invented the first Leica (Ur)

- His 1920 images of the floods in Wetzlar, Germany, captured with a prototype Ur, are considered to be the first series of reportage.

- His battle with Asthma and love for the outdoors led him to develop a smaller and lighter camera that could still produce large images

- Length of a roll of film is based on Oskar’s wingspan

- In honor of Barnack’s 100th birthday, Leica launched the Oskar Barnack Award and the first winner, Floris Bergkamp,was announced in 1980.

- Up to three images can be submitted per photographer

- Digital or Film

- Monochrome and/or Color

- All cameras and lenses welcome

- Images need to be all age-appropriate

- High Resolution JPGs, 300 dpi

- Submit images by emailing [email protected]
