About this Event

Storm Warning Ahead!

Get ready to be swept away for a day with Oxford Opera Company, as we explore storms within opera, and create our own! Many famous operas including Verdi’s ‘Otello’, Britten’s ‘Peter Grimes’ and Ade’s ‘The Tempest’ use music to evoke storms in their stories.

Led throughout the day by our expert facilitators, we’ll be looking at the different ways storms are used in opera to portray both broad themes as well as reflecting the internal emotions of specific characters. We’ll look at the different ways ‘storms’ can be created with our voices and bodies, alongside the use of musical instruments made on the day to create different stormy effects.

Suitable for those honing their music or performance skills, as well as those looking to explore music and performance for the first time, this workshop will include thunder, lightening, hurricanes, rain, hail...and anything else your own imagination can create. Join us on an adventure that takes you right into the eye of an operatic storm!

This is an unaccompanied day-long workshop for children aged 8-12. We do not recommend this workshop for children under 8. Parents and carers are welcome to join at 16.15 for a performance before collection. Children are required to bring their own packed lunch to this event. Please ensure this packed lunch is nut-free.

The Museum of Oxford and Oxford Opera company are delighted to offer a number of fully funded bursary places for children who would like to attend but face financial barriers to participation. These spaces are offered to families with no questions asked, and will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. To book a bursary place, please contact Charlotte directly on [email protected].
