March 15th 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Instructor: Marcelle Gauvin,
400 hr. Sva Ha Yoga Certified Instructor,
Associate Professor of Voice Berklee College of Music
Join Marcelle as she introduces a series of voice building postures and positions or “vocal asanas” designed to demonstrate the foundations of vocal mechanics in a connected and accessible way. Breathing techniques used by singers and speakers will be covered, helping participants to vocalize efficiently and effectively while remaining in a relaxed but energized, free-flowing practice. Students will explore the connection of these breathing techniques to the yogic practice of pranayama and will gain an understanding of how these methods serve as the foundation for resonant sound making.
Marcelle will then guide participants in a vocal flow, introducing the idea of open resonance for full vibratory potential. Through a series of vocal stretches, she will gradually guide the class in range-expanding exercises where students learn to mindfully apply these vocal mechanics. The concept of registration will be introduced through a flow of chest and head voice stretches designed to open, align, and strengthen the muscles used in these areas. During this full day workshop, vocal yogis will also learn about semi-occluded vocal tract exercises and when to use them for maximum benefit. The day will continue with a traditional light yoga stretch and flow incorporating sounding exercises to expand the yogic experience. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to apply these techniques by singing mantra or songs closing the day with a community singing circle.
