The Yes, And! Workshop with Mark di Battista.

This workshop showcases improvisatory methods of artmaking using watercolors and inks on yupo paper.

Participants will create abstract works of art using a variety of liquids – inks and watercolors, alcohol and acrylic medium -- poured, mixed and dried on non-absorbent yupo paper. Attention is paid to the way liquids behave, the way viscosity affects the rates of diffusion and mixing, the way alcohol and water interact, meeting as layered sheets or as puddled interfaces. Emphasis is placed on the prior anticipation of effect and the subsequent improvisatory reaction.

Participants are provided 6” x 6” squares of yupo papers, masked into 3” x 3” fields, and all requisite liquids including alcohol, water and medium, as well as watercolors, alcohol inks, acrylic inks, sumi ink…be prepared, this can be messy!

Mark DiBattista was trained originally in fluid dynamics, and is pleased to have had the opportunity to share this training to art making. In addition to providing advice on achieving desired shape and texture in the works, he will be happy to discuss the physical processes behind the art, as well as properties of the mathematical models that describe them.
