The WTC Letters: Everyone’s needed

On September 11, 2001, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in the United States led to the death of nearly 3000 people. In the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center (WTC) Dr. Alison Thompson became one of the thousands of volunteers who worked on the site of Ground Zero alongside rescue and recovery workers. Drawing from her extensive personal archive which includes photos, video captured on a Super 8 camera and letters written to volunteers and first responders, she will share the story of how ordinary people, through acts of service and kindness, played a crucial role in recovery efforts.

About Dr. Alison Thompson
Dr. Alison Thompson is a global humanitarian and mass-incident commander who has spent the past 25 years leading large refugee camps, field hospitals, and resilience hubs in response to natural and man-made disasters worldwide, including the Syrian, Afghan, Venezuelan, and Ukrainian refugee crises. Thompson was a first responder at the 911 attacks, where she founded her non-profit Third Wave Volunteers, which has led 965 disaster missions with over 30,000 volunteers, all led by Love in Action. Thompson has been recognized as the 2026 Australian of the Year, N.S W, and in 2022 received ‘’The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award’ from President Biden, the Order of Australia from Queen Elizabeth II, and is the Ambassador to the Haitian Ministry of Environment.
