This is the Morro Bay Art Association’s monthly meeting and free art demonstration.
About Instructors:
Debra Cobb is a self-taught embroiderer, beginning with purchased needlepoint and cross stitch kits. Over time, Debra’s other hobby as a medieval re-enactor encouraged, improved and developed her stitching skills using various textiles. A firm believer that one never stops learning, Debra took classes from the Embroiderer’s Guild of America, the Royal School of Needlework, Lucy Barter, and YouTube. Basically, wherever and whenever she could find them. “Although I enjoy working with silk threads, I love the bling, so adding goldwork, beads and gemstones is natural for many of my pieces. Over the past 5 years, I have enjoyed creating small handbags using my own designs. Some of these have been entered in exhibitions by the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design. I have also enjoyed teaching classes in needlework. Currently, my husband and I are collaborating on art pieces using medieval illumination and embroidery. Although some consider embroidery a lost art, I have dedicated myself to reviving this age-old practice so that it can be worn, touched, manipulated, gifted and re-interpreted.”
Sue Melvin was a slow bloomer when it came to the Needle Arts. Even though Sue has a B.A. in home economics and taught high school clothing for 5 years, she dabbled in cross-stitch and surface embroidery for years. It wasn't until she joined the Bishop's Peak Chapter of the Embroiderer's Guild of America (EGA) that she was awakened to the amazing world of Needle Art. Since joining the chapter in 2007, Sue has been exposed to a variety of stitch work and techniques. She has been very involved with the chapter, holding various offices including president. Sue has taught several classes to the chapter members and friends and has participated in some demos at the Mid-State Fair. Sue continues to expand her knowledge and techniques by taking on-line classes and seminars offered by EGA. It's a fun and rewarding hobby that she thoroughly enjoys and strives to encourage those who might be interested.
This free art demonstration is open and free to the public. Drop-ins are encouraged.
