About this Event

📚Lecture: "The Women Who Defined Fairy Tales (And History Forgot)"
🎤Speaker: Tish Black (Fairy Tale Author & Film Programmer)

A Who’s Who of the fairy tale literary salons of 1690s Paris. At the center is the Queen Bee, Madame d’Aulnoy, a woman with a mysterious past who coined the term “fairy tale.” Surrounding her are accomplished women writers celebrated at court, crowned by the Académie Française, and entangled in scandals from political intrigue to accusations of lesbianism.

In the background is Charles Perrault, who dismissed fairy tales as unworthy of serious literature, yet lives on as Mother Goose, while the women who shaped the genre are largely forgotten. This talk brings the Salonnières back into focus, giving them and their work their fair due as the true creators of the literary fairy tale.

Tish Black is a fairy tale author and film programmer. Her debut book, Ebony, Blood, and Snow, is for fans of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber: thirteen stories, inspired by fairy tales, of heroines who follow their gut, stand up for what they believe is right, and sometimes just get revenge. She has been studying fairy tales and folklore for many years and turning what she learns into content like that one TikTok video with 1.6M views and her video essays on fairy tale film adaptations. You may find Tish online at TishBlack.com, physically in Ottawa, and spiritually in the local cemetery. Her next book is inspired by winter folklore.
