In 1853, George Washington’s Mount Vernon was nearly lost forever. His heirs could no longer maintain the estate, and both the federal government and the Commonwealth of Virginia declined to purchase it.To the rescue came the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union. Among them was club founder Mrs. Alexander (Martha) Mitchell, Wisconsin’s first representative. She served for 44 years, dedicating her time and resources to preserving the iconic estate on the Potomac.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Anne “Dede” Neal Petri serves as the 24th Regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, America’s first historic preservation organization and first women’s patriotic society, founded in 1858. She is the fifth Vice Regent to represent Wisconsin.Her 30 years of leadership span preservation, civic organizations, and the humanities. Dede will share the Association’s remarkable history, with special attention to Martha Mitchell and the importance of carrying history forward.
