The Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in 2024 and Beyond.

In this IIEA panel event, three expert speakers will discuss the present state of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda. The panel will reflect upon how as the global security environment continues to deteriorate, the importance of Security Council Resolution 1325, and a focus on the specific challenges which conflict poses to women in conflict settings has grown only more important. Moreover, the panel will explore the role of Women in conflict resolution, their role in UN peacekeeping, and their role in conflict prevention

About the Speaker:

Major-General (Ret) Maureen O’Brien is a native of Galway city, and graduated from University College Galway (UCG) with B.Sc. and H.Dip.Ed before being awarded a cadetship in Óglaigh na hÉireann in 1981. In 2021, Major General (Ret.) O’Brien served as Deputy Military Advisor to the UN Under Secretary General for Peace Operations. She is Ireland’s first female officer to reach the rank of Major General. During her career, Maj-Gen O’Brien has amassed extensive overseas service, including as Acting Force Commander in UNDOF in Syria, and prior to that, UN peacekeeping experience in Lebanon, Western Sahara, Timor-Leste, and Chad. She also worked with OSCE in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has recently retired from Óglaigh na hÉireann.

Dr Sally Anne Corcoran served the UN for nearly 2 decades in the human rights, political & gender areas. HQ posts included: UNOG, OHCHR, UNICEF & WHO. Field posts included: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Croatia & Cyprus. An Irish Research Council Scholar, she received her PhD in Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, Galway University 2022; MA International Law: Johns Hopkins University, SAIS, 1996, BA International Relations: AU 1990. She is also a Kylemore Abbey alumna

Sophie McGuirk works in the Department of Foreign Affairs, in the Peace and Stability Unit. Her work is particularly focused on of Women, Peace, and Security, and peacebuilding. Sophie previously served in the Consular Directorate of DFA. Her work experience includes positions in the European Commission and the European Travel Commission. Sophie holds a BA in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin and an Advanced Masters in European Integration from Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
