About this Event

If Beethoven ever appeared as clean and put-together as most historic imagery of him suggests, it was only after he'd been pressured into a bath and his friends had switched out the dirty clothes in his closet for clean ones. A man who was constantly changing lodgings and was once even arrested for what others mistook for vagrancy, Beethoven was a wild one!

We're celebrating Beethoven's wild ways in the first program of Beerthoven's Ninth Season: The Wild Rover! Featuring a quartet first performed at a tavern known as The Wild Man; Beethoven's Op. 132 String Quartet in A Minor. Music from other wild men on the program includes Hugo Wolf's Italian Serenade and Debussy's one and only string quartet.

Our featured ensemble is the all-Korean, all-female string quartet Risus; winners of the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the current Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at the University of Texas at Austin. They'll be performing in the main gallery room inside the Neill-Cochran House Museum.

Thanks to our sponsors, we will be serving warm pastries and cold beer generously provided by Easy Tiger and Lazarus Brewing as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages--all at no additional cost!

Kids are welcome! Tickets for children as well as students through college age are available for $10. Purchase at the door or email [email protected] for advance student tickets.

Additional Performances Friday, September 30th and Sunday, October 2nd

If you're looking for a performance on another date, please visit this page to reserve tickets for our shows at Saengerrunde Halle!

Attend With Your Beerthoven Season Pass!

This concert is the first of a full season of five Beerthoven events throughout the year. Save yourself a seat and a few bucks by ordering your Season Pass today!

Parking Info:

Look for parking in the state parking garages immediately surrounding the Saengerrunde facilities. If these are unavailable or closed off, try the Texas Capitol Visitors Center, three blocks south of the Saengerrunde on San Jacinto.

During most of our events these are open and free of charge. Sometimes there is a parking attendant charging $7-10, especially when concurrent events take place in the Erwin Center.

We cannot guarantee their availability so we would recommend coming early in case you need to use the Capitol Visitors Center garage (14th and San Jacinto) or find on-street parking.

Safety Protocols:

We encourage all members of our community to get vaccinated and boosted as this is the best way to ensure that our concert can proceed without additional safety requirements. Beerthoven will follow federal and local guidelines closely to determine appropriate safety protocols in the event of another Covid surge. As of this writing, the CDC has determined that the level of risk in Austin is low. If this situation holds we therefore intend to produce the concert without requiring masking or social distancing. In the event of another surge we may adjust our requirements and notify our ticketed guests in advance of the performance.

About Beerthoven:

The critically-acclaimed Beerthoven Concert Series is a down-to-earth, approachable celebration of classical song, chamber music, and beer; a quirky mixture of Bach and Doppelbock in unique and intimate settings. Beerthoven finds its inspiration in the musical and festive events of the Austin Saengerrunde as well as the private "salon" concerts of Beethoven's time. Beerthoven events feature live classical music, free beer, and other refreshments and snacks in an all-inclusive manner. There is no backstage here; audience members may even find themselves standing in line for beer with the performers.

Programming is intentionally diverse in tone, instrumentation, and featured performers. Beerthoven supports local artists by offering fair compensation and unique performance venues. Audience members will find our prices at the very low end of typical classical concerts--especially for students and especially given the high quality of the exbeerience.
