The Wild Called Maxx is the story of Maxx, a young and progressive woman struggling to merge her creative identity with her lifestyle. She leaves her traditional job in the suburbs and journeys to the city. The unknown jungle of metropolitan New York, full of monsters, is initially overwhelming to Maxx. Over time, she finds ardent friends willing to help her find her creative voice. An interdisciplinary project, The Wild Called Maxx features pop, jazz and original music combined with twenty-two illustrations and narration. The ensemble is comprised of Grammy Award-nominated Sara Gazarek (The Eastman School of Music), Fresno State faculty, Limor Toren-Immerman, Amelia Smith, Russ Zokaites, Richard Giddens and Mark Ferber with local cellist Nicholas Anton.
The creators, Whitney George (composer), Sammy Lopez (illustrator), and Russ Zokaites (author/soloist), will give a short pre-concert lecture about the design process.
The Wild Called Maxx was premiered at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY, by the Curiosity Cabinet in 2016 and featured at the International Trombone Festival in Muncie, IN, in 2019.
