The Whisby Nature Reserve will yet again host one of the most popular annual adventures in the LSS calendar. Technically it's held on the last weekend in January, and although Saturday is the last day of the month, this year it is going to be on Sunday the 1st of February.
As always, it is a chance to get together, meet new people, catch up with familiar faces, blow away some of the New Year cobwebs, and maybe laugh about some of the resolutions we might have broken already. It involves a dog friendly leisurely walk around some of the well maintained and level paths around the nature reserve, with stops for photo opportunities, snack breaks, etc. We meet at the Natural World Centre, Whisby, around 11, and when we're ready, set off into the potentially frozen wilderness on the Orange route round Grebe Lake to start with. There's the opportunity to head back to the centre as that route comes to an end, or carry on to the Red, then Yellow route before getting back to the centre.
The large car park costs £2, but entrance to the park and buildings is free. It can get busy on the day, so if you want to park closer to the centre you may need to consider an earlier arrival.
The Natural World Centre makes an ideal HQ, with friendly staff, a lovely cafeteria with delicious cakes and hot food, a shop full of nice things, and a cracking viewing platform. We normally finish off with a bite to eat and a hot drink here after the walk. Some hardier souls go for another walk after taking sustenance on board, exploring the tracks further afield in the reserve.
As mentioned, the reserve is dog friendly, and the paths are easily accessible for all abilities. Clothing choices are better made on the day. So far the 'Winter Wonderland Safari Adventure' could have been done under the trades description act, as the weather has been very mild in the past to say the least, with ice-cream, sun-cream and sunglasses needed, and blooming crocuses anyone?
Looking how this year is ending, dressing like the divers from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea might be more appropriate. Who knows, this coming event, fingers crossed (yet again!), we might actually get some winter appropriate precipitation for a change. We live in hope.
