ABOUT THE BOOK: Written by Blackie the Cat and illustrated by best pal Gary Baseman, The Mighty Paw is the story about the Great Hate between the Black Cats and the Red Elifants.The last cat on Earth, Blackie the Cat, survives in a land dominated by his great adversaries, the Red Elifants*. One day he can no longer handle seeing his ancestors worn as trophies, and cruel words push him to commit an act that changes his life forever. A story of persistence and the myths passed down over generations, The Mighty Paw shares a tale of two opposing sides and how the Age of the Great Hate began. Sometimes only in the most desperate of times, does healing and kindness finally arrive.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Los Angeles-based Gary Baseman explores the “beauty of the bittersweetness of life” through painting, performance, film, and fashion. Recent projects include a collaboration with COACH; a documentary “Mythical Creatures” about his family heritage; and a traveling retrospective that featured hundreds of his paintings, photographs, videos, and toy and costume designs.
Baseman’s multifaceted career includes illustration for clients including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and The Wall Street Journal and the bestselling board game Cranium; as well as animation for which he created the Emmy and BAFTA award-winning series and feature film “Teacher’s Pet” for ABC/Disney. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences on graphic and multidisciplinary arts and visual communications.
Notably, this is also Gary's second presentation at the Los Angeles Breakfast Club!

ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse, Friendship Auditorium, located at 3201 Riverside Drive, near the corner of Los Feliz Boulevard, in Griffith Park. Best described as a variety show, attendees enjoy a catered breakfast, silly songs, club traditions, and an interesting presentation from a guest speaker.
