A grieving mother. A flooded football field. A burdened woman. Three emotional stories set in Nepal show how communities are being impacted by flooding and drought, all made worse by the injustice of climate change and increasing extreme weather events.

The Weight of Water was born from an impulse to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis through intimate human interest stories from the breathtakingly beautiful Nepal, intertwined with commentary from Nepali climate change experts and activists. The country has been feeling the impacts of a changing climate in a variety of ways, and our film focuses on three families that are experiencing resulting floods and water scarcity. From a mother who has to carry drinking water from a faraway spring, to a flooded football field destroying children’s dreams, the film shows the diverse ways this unjust crisis is challenging the communities on the frontlines today.

Regularly described as a beautifully moving watch, and sound mixed by multi Emmy award-winning sound studio ‘Boom Post’ who have worked on Peaky Blinders, The Crown among many other international TV and movie hits, the film is best experienced on the big screen and with a great sound system!

Since the film's release in April 2022, it has won best documentary at the Aravali International Film Festival 2022, and was longlisted for best documentary at the One World Media awards which honour the best media coverage of the global south. The film has been celebrated by both film industry folk and the scientific community, which is the best validation we could have asked for. A shorter 52 minute version of the film has been broadcast globally on DW TV 25 times in English, German, Spanish and Arabic and has been viewed over 500,000 times on their Youtube channels alone.

Please join us for the first UK screening of the film at the fantastic and planet loving X+Why People's Mission Hall in Whitechapel, London on the 29th of June 2022.

Event schedule:

“How does climate change impact water and through water, people? This question challenges [even] scientists to explain in their own language, and here the filmmakers explain through masterful storytelling. The three interwoven stories painted against the canvas of everyday life in Nepal help us to feel the ‘weight of water’ for those in the front lines of climate change impacts."

— Laurie Ann Vasily, Head of Knowledge Management and Communication at International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu.

“Compellingly told human interest stories about the impacts of climate change in the severely underrepresented, breathtakingly beautiful, and culturally rich country of Nepal, tied together by the theme of water.”

— Susanna Basso, Climate Crisis Film Festival Artistic Director, UK

"With its scenic footage and background score of melancholic string sections, the documentary looks at the delicate relationship between mankind and an elemental source of life — water — to highlight how the looming climate crisis can wreck the balance. But the 68-minute feature's biggest takeaway is its ability to dissect the complexity of the climate change issue."

— News9 “The Weight of Water”, on climate change's toll in Nepal, is the documentary this crisis needs
