The Way I See It
Plein Air and Figurative Oil Painting
by Timothy Herron
(1954-?)
April 6, 2023 - April 29, 2023
The Way I See It by Timothy Herron features a collection of work made from real life observations. Timothy is a figurative artist, portrait artist, and a plein air painter. This body of work will include portraits, landscapes, and figure studies.
Timothy Herron attended the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Cleveland Institute of Art, and Tri-C. All colleges encouraged him to draw from life whenever possible. It quickly became a passion, and he would draw or paint whenever a model was available. He has since gone on to start The Pretentious Cleveland Portrait Artists alongside Brian Pierce. Tim and Brian started the Pretentious Cleveland Portrait Artists in 2005. They are still meeting every Friday to draw the portraits of various models who sign up to pose. The session is also available online, and is free for both artists and models to participate.
Timothy has also collaborated alongside other artists such as the late Robert Ritchie, to experiment with new techniques. He has used such experiences in tandem with his signature figurative paintings to create the work he does now. In his approach to figurative work he uses the background and figure to extend the attention across the entire design.
His plein air painting career began 20 years ago. Timothy started painting in his neighborhood of Tremont in Cleveland. He eventually moved into new areas of Cleveland from the Coventry area on the east side, to Bay Arts and Root Café in Lakewood, and other plein air paintings on the west side. For the last couple of years he has taken to painting in areas that have never seen a plein air painter, so as to help expose them to this amazing art form.

More about the artist:
After only taking one class in art in High School I became addicted to drawing and painting and knew that I would pursue it for life. Getting a late start kept me from working in the art field but not abandoning my hopes of making an impact in art.
After being encouraged by my teachers at the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Cleveland Institute of Art and Tri-C to draw from life whenever possible. It became a passion and I drew or painted whenever a model was available knowing one day I would be retired and could devote all my time to it. Starting out I had envisioned myself as a portrait painter only to realize most portrait painters had to paint from photos to get commissions. Ugh. I turned to plein air since it required me to draw from life. I continue to do figurative painting but only from life with 5-6 sittings, normally with other artists to help cover the cost of the models.
My figurative painting
Early on I hated the backgrounds that were normally afforded the models who were posing, windows, doors, paintings on walls etc. I decided to collaborate with my friend the late Robert Ritchie who did abstract/non objective art so I could break away from traditional backgrounds. We did about 9 portraits together where I did the flesh, as in the head, hands, feet and Robert would do the backgrounds and we would meet in the middle on the clothes. I would take his 2D designs and make them more 3D on the torso. I used that experience to create the backgrounds I do now on my figurative paintings. Normally an artist would want the background to not draw attention from the figure. In my approach I want the background and figure to extend the attention across the entire design.
The Pretentious Cleveland Portrait Artists
In order to get steady portrait practice myself and Brian Pierce started the Pretentious Cleveland Portrait Artists in 2005. We are still meeting every Friday to draw the portrait of whomever signed up to pose. We are unique as there is no money exchanged as the models are posing for the portraits. Artists get steady practice and a new face each week with models ranging from authors, poets, politicians, musicians and every walk of life and the artists drawings are posted on FB page Tim Herron and on our web site: https://www.literarycafeartists.com/
Plein Air painting
About 20 years ago I started plein air painting in my neighborhood of Tremont in Cleveland. I eventually moved into new areas of Cleveland from the Coventry and Larchmere area on the east side to Bay Arts and Root Café in Lakewood and other paintings on the west side. For the last couple of years I’ve been painting in areas that have never seen a plein air painter to help expose them to this amazing art form that Van Gogh made popular. I have a Red/Green color blindness which affects the ability to see the color temperature as it gets to a more neutral tint. I grew up seeing yellow, red, blue, green and had no problems till I took a color blindness test. The reason I bring this up is I don’t enjoy painting in parks and mostly green areas but in more urban areas that have bright colors to go along with the shrubs and trees. Funny, when I paint I dress for warmth not fashion and 5 times I had people offer me money! Not to buy the painting but a couple of bucks at a time as though I was the person on the side of the highway ramp asking for money and they wanted to help.
