Rooted in the beloved 1599 chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (“Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying”), The Watchmen’s Song explores how generations of composers have reimagined this timeless call to awaken the spirit. From the 17th-century masterworks of Franz Tunder, Dietrich Buxtehude, and J. S. Bach, to the 20th-century variations of Hugo Distler, this program traces the enduring journey of hope and renewal across four centuries of music.Interwoven throughout are sacred works by Heinrich Schütz and Nicolaus Bruhns, whose expressive harmonies evoke both contemplation and joy—perfect for the Advent season.
