The 250th anniversary of the opening of the American Revolution also brings the 250th birthday of the Wallace House. In December 1775, Scottish emigrant and Philadelphia merchant John Wallace purchased 95 acres at “Hope Farm” from the Old Dutch Parsonage’s Rev. Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh and oversaw construction of the Wallace House in 1776 and 1777, unknowingly finishing the house in time for its service as George Washington’s winter headquarters for the Middlebrook Cantonment of 1778-79.Annabelle Radcliffe-Trenner and Kallie Kothmann of Historic Building Architects have led surveys and studies of the Wallace House in preparation for the historic structure’s rehabilitation for Revolution NJ. They share new research and findings into the Wallace House’s history and plans for the rehabilitation due to begin this year.
Exterior rehabilitation of Wallace House State Historic Site is funded in part by a Semiquincentennial Grant from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund.
