The Village Singer — ”American Grammy Award-winning composer and beloved Minnesota artist, Stephen Paulus premiered his first opera, The Village Singer, in 1979, to great acclaim. This comic, one-act chamber work, rich with Paulus' lush hymn settings, speaks to the heart of the mission of Raison d'Être Opéra, as it tells the poignant story of Candace Whitcomb, the church choir soloist whose established reputation is threatened by the emergence of gifted young soprano.
~ Gary Briggle, RDO Executive Director
Prologue: Twelve Emily Dickinson Poems— This beautiful song cycle was composed in 1950 and initially not especially well-received by critics, prompting Copland to note wryly to Leonard Bernstein, "I decided I must have written a better cycle than I had realized."
