About the Exhibition
The Vessels of Memory We Carry

The Deering Estate ‘Contemporary Currents’ series is an annual program that integrates contemporary art with collections and historic houses. The Contemporary Currents exhibitions are exhibited for a three to six-month period.

The Vessels of Memory We Carry exhibits artist Tori S. Scott as she explores her cultural heritage and connection to the Gullah Geechee through a mixed media exhibition. The Gullah Geechee comprises various African ethnic groups who reside in the Southeast United States, spanning the coastal region and sea islands between Jacksonville, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida. The Gullah Geechee people are stewards of West African history in the United States, advocating for human rights, environmental justice and the cultivation of a rich cultural legacy. Visually, The Vessels of Memory We Carry is anchored by indigo, a color symbolic of the resilience and strength of African Americans. Incurring this symbolism, Tori S. Scott reclaims her familial history through her multimedium mastery, producing a traditional Bottle Tree, Quilt and Sweetgrass Basket, supported by a film detailing the powerful stories of her community. The Vessels of Memory We Carry divulges Scott’s research journey of two years; defined by the investigation and creative interpretation of utilitarian art, agricultural traditions, spiritual practices, ancestral memory, and textile elements. They weave together a story of personal and cultural discovery, unearthing valuable connections between herself, her mother, her community, and her ancestors.

Installed in The Garden Room, a historic space in the Richmond Cottage at the Deering Estate, The Vessels of Memory We Carry will be on view from August 1st to October 20th, 2026.

About the Artist

Tori S. Scott is a visual artist, educator, and curator based in Miami, Florida. Scott received her BFA in Studio Art from Florida International University in 2020 and received her MA in Museum Studies at Johns Hopkins University in 2025. Scott's creative journey is guided by a profound commitment to exploring and preserving culture, lived experiences, and memories. Through her work, she examines collective histories, celebrating the richness and resilience of Black communities while also reflecting on the struggles, joys, and personal narratives that shape identity. In a society that is constantly evolving, Scott’s work comments on the ways in which memory is formed by what we choose to remember and what is forgotten. Working across interdisciplinary practice, Scott uses visual storytelling to communicate the layered complexities of the Black experience. Her work serves as a vessel through which the intangible heritage of the past and present can be preserved and carried forward. Scott has exhibited her work in several museums and gallery spaces throughout South Florida, including the Frost Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum, and Deering Estate. In addition to her artistic practice, she has curated exhibitions informed by her background in Museum Studies.
