What can gemstones teach teenagers about money and the choices they make?

Two gemstones may look remarkably similar, yet their prices can be vastly different.

Something rare may be valuable, but does that always make it a good choice?

And when we have limited resources, how do we decide what to spend, save, protect or grow?

Welcome to The Value Lab — Teens, an interactive learning experience by The Gem Museum.

Through real gemstones, surprising discoveries and engaging team challenges, teenagers will explore financial literacy concepts and develop practical decision-making skills.

No previous knowledge of gemstones or finance is required.

Instead of learning about money through lectures alone, participants will use gemstones as a starting point to explore how value works.

They’ll examine gemstones, compare different options, question assumptions and discover why having the right information matters.

Through interactive challenges, they’ll apply these ideas to everyday decisions involving money, resources, risk and future priorities.

It’s learning by discovering, discussing and doing.

What Will Teenagers Learn?

By the end of the workshop, participants will have explored how to:

• Distinguish between price and value.
• Ask better questions before making decisions.
• Recognise needs, wants and competing priorities.
• Understand basic concepts of saving, investing, risk and protection.
• Consider the consequences of financial choices.
• Work with others to solve problems and explain their decisions.
• Think more intentionally about the resources available to them.

The goal isn’t to tell teenagers exactly what decisions to make.

It’s to help them develop the confidence, curiosity and critical thinking skills to make more informed choices.

Who Is This Workshop For?

Teenagers aged 13–17 who enjoy discovering new things, solving problems and participating in interactive challenges.

The programme is suitable for students with different levels of familiarity with gemstones and money.

It may be particularly interesting for parents and educators looking for an engaging introduction to financial literacy beyond the classroom.

Participants will learn through hands-on activities, individual reflection and small-group teamwork.

Loke Hui Ying
Co-founder, The Gem Museum
Gemologist & Financial Consultant, Orion Wealth

Hui Ying brings together her experience in gemology, museum education, entrepreneurship and financial consulting.

Through The Value Lab, she uses gemstones and practical challenges to help participants explore value, financial understanding and decision-making in an engaging and accessible way.
