What is New Thought? How is it foundational to the many Unity Churches in Tampa Bay, the U.S. and beyond? New Thought is a spiritual movement that originated in the United States during the 1830s that emphasizes how our thoughts create reality, divine presence resides in everyone, and positive thinking/prayer can heal and transform lives. New Thought is also known as the mind-cure or mind-healing movement. It is not based on a seminal text or written doctrine. Like Theosophy, its belief system is based on metaphysical principles about the nature of reality that allow for a wide and varying range of views among its followers.
New Thought’s diverse followers include those who believe in religions like Christianity as well as those who hold no religious beliefs. This diversity makes it difficult to estimate the number of New Thought adherents or to pinpoint where they are located. The Unity Church, founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in 1889, is the largest organization stemming from New Thought. The ideas of the movement are disseminated by leaders including Tampa Bay’s Rev. Linda McLeod through churches as well as speeches, conferences, and essays in the United States, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
