About this Event

The Hungarian revolution of 1956 represented a profound challenge not only to the Soviet bloc but also to the United Nations (UN). Because of the Soviet Union's standing as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the United States and its allies had to work through the UN General Assembly to establish a Special Committee on the Problem of Hungary. The committee issued a detailed report on the crisis that debunked Soviet falsehoods, but the UN ultimately was unable to prevent the severe re-imposition of Soviet control over Hungary. The seminar presents a wide range of new archival materials pertaining to the revolution and the UN Special Committee.
