Learning Objectives:
1. Reframe fundraising as a trust-based discipline - Participants will be able to articulate how
collaboration, ethics, and transparency function as core drivers of donor trust—not just compliance or “best
practices.”
2. Apply ethical decision-making in real fundraising scenarios - Participants will be able to identify
common ethical gray areas in fundraising and apply a clear framework for making decisions that protect
donor intent and organizational integrity.
3. Design more transparent donor experiences - Participants will be able to evaluate their current donor
communications and implement at least two strategies to increase clarity, visibility of impact, and honesty in
reporting.
4. Leverage collaboration as a fundraising strategy, not just a value - Participants will be able to describe
how cross-sector and internal collaboration can increase donor confidence, reduce duplication, and amplify
impact.
About the Presenter:
Wendy Pestrue is a nonprofit healthcare executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience spanning health systems, academic medicine, and community philanthropy. She brings expertise in strategic program
development, institutional advancement, and cross-sector collaboration to strengthen agencies, medical centers, and universities'
Her career includes senior leadership roles with the United Way of Greater Toledo, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Temple University College of Medicine, The Texas Heart Institute, and the Bon Secours Health System. Prior to relocating to Ohio, she served as Vice President for Demographic Health and Wellness for Bon Secours Virginia, overseeing strategic growth initiatives across seven hospitals, outpatient services, and hospice care. Her professional foundation includes frontline transplant nursing, public education, government affairs, and
hospital business development, experiences that continue to shape her systems-level perspective.
As President & CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo, Wendy has led a strategic transformation toward a more data-driven, accountable, and collaborative community impact model. Under her leadership, the organization established a Community Analytics & Research Center, expanded and modernized 2-1-1
services, and repositioned United Way as a regional leader in measurable, outcomes-focused investment to address basic needs and economic stability.
Wendy is particularly focused on aligning emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, with
health equity and human services innovation. Her work centers on building durable community infrastructure that bridges philanthropy, healthcare, education, and public systems to improve long-term outcomes across Northwest Ohio.
