Scarred by war and haunted by black marketeers, Vienna is governed by the occupying forces of four different countries: Great Britain, the United States, Russia, and France. Into this city of hardship and political confusion steps Holly Martins, an American writer of pulp westerns, who has been brought there to join in the business venture of his boyhood friend Harry Lime. In 1949, The Third Man won the Grand Prix du Festival, which, prior to 1955, was the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film also received an Academy Award in 1951 for Best Cinematography and earned two nominations (Best Director and Best Editing). Among other accolades, the British Film Institute voted The Third Man the greatest British film of all time.
