About this Event
Join Thinking Cap Theatre for a reception and play reading.
Written in the early 17th century by John Fletcher, The Woman's Prize; or, The Tamer Tamed represents a dramatic counterpoint to Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew (1594). While in Shakespeare's play, it is the outspoken Katherina who is subjected to taming by her husband Petruchio, in Fletcher's response, Katherina has died and Petruchio has remarried Maria. As a testament to the controversial reception of Shakespeare's play at the time of its staging, Flecher flips the script, offering a more redeeming portrait of a woman's worth in marriage. Here Petruchio receives his overdue comeuppance thanks to Maria, who summons the aid of her sisters and comically tames her former tamer.
