THE TAME FOX: Meditations on Hugh O’Neillby Áine Mallon & Emily DeDakis
They cultivated me – so they thought
I was their garden in the wilderness
Until I turned fox & all the island was henhouse
& their only hope was to hunt me down again
Taking in the whole life of the last chieftain of the O’Neills, this Irish traditional suite blends music (composed by Áine Mallon) and story (written by Emily DeDakis) to reimagine the history and myths surrounding the Flight of the Earls. These spoken meditations – woven with laments and reels, jigs and bugle calls, prayers and ballads – invite listeners into the tumultuous world of Hugh O’Neill, along with the allies, spies, mercenaries and rulers of church and state who helped and hunted him. THE TAME FOX is a musical meditation on wildness, wilderness, and the inheritance of rebellion.
