Seaside resorts started to develop in the early eighteenth century, when it became fashionable to use sea water for health purposes. Medical opinion of the day had suggested sea water as a cure for all manner of illnesses, and people were only too willing to give this a try in an attempt to improve their wellbeing. By far the largest centre of population at the time was London, and the proximity of the Kent coast gave rise to several coastal towns and villages developing into the resorts we know and love today. This talk uses a number of period images to tell the story.
