Event organisers

This event is organised by the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Pedagogy (0 to 11 Years) (HHCP) and the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE).

At this international seminar we will hear about cutting edge research and practice informing the teaching of phonics, reading and writing. Keynote speakers will discuss the teaching of reading and writing from the perspective of the regions where they live and work. The seminar will conclude with a talk by Dominic Wyse (Institute of Education IOE, University College London UCL) and Charlotte Hacking (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) to launch their new book, The Balancing Act: An evidence-based approach to teaching phonics, reading and writing.

A particularly narrow synthetic phonics approach has increasingly come to dominate primary education policy in some regions of the world. Teachers and teacher educators have come under attack from some journalists and others about their teaching methods. It is loudly proclaimed that ‘The Science of Reading’ proves that synthetic phonics is the only way. But is this the true story, and is there a better way to help children learn to read? This event has some answers to these questions.

  • Young-Suk Grace Kim, Professor and the Senior Associate Dean, School of Education, University of California, Irvine, USA.
  • Hyejeong Ahn, Senior Lecturer (Languages and Literacies), Faculty of Education, The University of Melbourne, Australia

Refund policy

Eventbrite’s refund policy states that by default, fees are not refunded on orders. This means that the attendee will receive a refund for the amount they paid minus the Eventbrite fees. There are a couple exceptions:

• If the refund is made before the charge has settled (usually within 24 hours), the original charge will be completely voided.

• If the refund reason is "COVID-19", "Duplicate order", or "Event cancelled or postponed", the fees will be refunded as well.

When the Eventbrite fees are charged to a £30 cancelled-ticket order, the buyer would receive £28.05 refund. Requests for refunds will be processed up to 30 days before the event starts and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Requests for refunds can be emailed to [email protected]. We are aiming to respond to refund requests within 7 days.

The refund will return to the attendee's original payment method within 5-7 business days. If the refund goes to a cancelled or expired card, the attendee may need to contact their bank or credit card company for help.
