About this Event
The SuSu: Caribbean Identity, Memory, & Community through Care, Resistance
As part of NEFER's Caribbean Heritage Month series, Saltwater Roots, join us for an evening with Dr. Tyesha Maddox, author of A Home Away from Home: Mutual Aid, Political Activism, and Caribbean American Identity, in conversation with Terrence Freeman.
Long before "mutual aid" became a common phrase, Caribbean immigrants in New York were building networks of care, support, and collective survival. Through benevolent societies, community organizations, and grassroots leadership—often led by Caribbean women—they created pathways to housing, employment, financial stability, and belonging.
Together, Maddox and Freeman will explore the history of these powerful traditions and what they can teach us about community, identity, and collective care today. The evening will include a reading, conversation, audience Q&A, and book signing.
Come gather in the spirit of Saltwater Roots as we reflect on the enduring power of people coming together to create home, wherever they are.
The conversation will explore:
- Mutual Aid & Community Care
- Political Activism & Collective Power
- Home & Belonging
Limited numbeer of books will be available for purchase and signing. We strongly encourage you to purchase your book in advance.
