The Sufi's Nightingale Musical
About this Event
The Sufi’s Nightingale: A Major Musical Production
Experience the World Premiere of a Transformative South Asian Musical Drama at Boston’s Historic Strand Theatre!
🎭 About the Event
The historic Strand Theatre is proud to present the world-premiere musical adaptation of Sarbpreet Singh’s acclaimed, bestselling historical novel, The Sufi’s Nightingale. Written and composed by Singh, this queer-affirming production traces the extraordinary spiritual metamorphosis of Shah Hussain, a 16th-century scholar who turns away from a rigid seminary to become the celebrated "King of the Malamati Sufis" in medieval Lahore.
Told from the poignant perspective of Maqbool, an intersex acolyte who serves as Hussain’s "nightingale," the narrative explores the "unity of opposites". When the handsome Brahmin youth Madho storms into Hussain's life, it ignites a mesmerizing saga of passionate love, jealousy, and deep mystical devotion. Over time, their individual identities beautifully merge into folklore, leaving a legacy that still celebrates the ultimate triumph of love over law.
✨ Production Highlights
- Live Musical Ensemble: Features brand-new, original compositions by Sarbpreet Singh based on classical Ragas, weaving together 16th-century spiritual poetry (Kafis) by Shah Hussain, Damodar Gulati, and Raskhan.
- Mesmerizing Choreography: Original choreography by accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer Juhi Chaudhary, beautifully blending traditional Sufi dancing, Kathak, ecstatic sama, and dhamal dance.
