The Studio Session: Design Lab (Kids)

In this March Studio Session, kids will explore identity and self-expression through a hands-on Design Lab experience.

Using a kid-friendly version of the Engineering Design Process, participants will complete a guided Design Challenge to design a tote bag that represents who they are—their interests, personality, and creativity.

This experience blends art, STEM, and confidence-building, helping kids learn that design is about thinking, planning, and making intentional choices, not just decorating.

Design a tote bag that represents YOU.

Participants will:

• Learn how colors communicate meaning
• Use symbols and words to represent ideas and interests
• Plan their design before creating
• Follow a step-by-step design process used by real designers and engineers

Every tote is unique—because every child is unique.

• The Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Reflect)
• Color theory and symbolism
• Planning, problem-solving, and decision-making
• Creative confidence and self-expression

Each participant will design and take home:

• A custom identity tote bag
• A design planning sheet
• New confidence in explaining their ideas and choices

• Encourages self-expression in a positive, structured way
• Introduces real-world design and engineering thinking
• Builds confidence, focus, and decision-making skills
• Creates a functional item kids actually use
