The Student Lens: Reporting Inside Oakland Schools

With mentorship from editors and reporters at The Oaklandside, these high-school journalists have been covering their campuses from the inside, documenting the challenges, contradictions, and everyday moments that define their education — and highlighting pressing issues across the district.

Moderated by The Oaklandside’s education equity reporter Ashley McBride, the discussion will feature students sharing what they’ve observed through their reporting, in conversation with OUSD leaders. Together, they’ll explore what shapes the conditions inside schools, how policies, resources, history, and lived experience intersect - and bridge the perspectives of adults and students navigating the system.
