What does it mean to be a stranger?
On what has been termed 'Evil May Day', the 1st May 1517 in London, anti-immigrant riots directed against foreign workers and residents in London inspired William Shakespeare to write a speech calling for compassion and tolerance - the speech has since become known as 'The Strangers’ Case'.
This event brings together people of different ethnicity to present their lived experience around migration, identity, belonging and the human need for refuge. Moving, urgent and deeply human, these Belfast performances invite audiences into a shared act of imagination: to see the world through the eyes of the outsider — and to ask what kind of society we want to build.
The Sanctuary Theatre, Thursday 25th to Saturday 27th June 2016. £15.00. 'The Stranger's Case' is a joint project between Bright Umbrella and Smock Alley Theatre Dublin and is supported by the Shared Island Civic Society Fund.
