David Lynch’s most unexpected film is also one of his most moving. Based on a true story, The Straight Story follows Alvin Straight, an aging Midwesterner who sets out on a journey by lawnmower to reconcile with his estranged brother. What unfolds is a quiet, deeply human road movie—Lynchian not for its surrealism, but for its deep fascination with people, landscape, and time.
Shot by legendary cinematographer Freddie Francis, the film transforms the American heartland into something luminous and vast, while Richard Farnsworth, in his final role, delivers a performance of quiet dignity and emotional depth. A rare film about regret, resilience, and the long road to forgiveness.
